Tips for Finding a Job that is Right for You

One of the most important things to think about when applying and searching for jobs is thinking about what you’re passionate about and enjoy. As Confucius said, “choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”– Themuse. But it can be hard to identify what you love and connect that to possible jobs and careers. Here are some tips to help you discover what jobs you’ll enjoy doing.

Self Awareness

A question you need to ask yourself is “what is my personality type”? Are you outgoing and extroverted? Do you love being around people? If the answer is yes then a desk job in cuticle isn’t something you’ll likely enjoy. If you are more introverted than a back-office job would probably be a better fit for you. It is extremely valuable when it comes to enjoying work to pursue jobs that align with your natural skills and personality type.

Work Environment

The next question you want to ask yourself is “what type of work environment do you thrive in”? Some people work better on teams, others do not. Some people prefer direct leadership over others forms leadership. Do you enjoy connecting with your coworkers and building relationships? Nowadays it almost impossible to never work as apart of a team, but certain jobs require teamwork as a daily function where others do not. Jobs that work in teams usually build relationships, lead each other, and hold each other accountable. This is in contrast to jobs where you work alone at your desk as a part of a large department and usually report to a manager directly above you. Identifying the type of work environment you succeed in is a great first step to discovering jobs you will enjoy.

Values

Lastly, you need to ask yourself “What are my values, and what companies align with my values”? Working at a company with different values than you isn’t necessarily bad, but it can be if it causes internal conflict. Every organization has a culture and you as an employee are expected to follow company culture and make decisions with the companies values in mind. If you don’t align with the values of an organization it is likely you will feel like an outsider to the organization’s culture. It is important to know your values and look to work for company’s that share values with you to not only enjoy where you work but feel good about the work your doing.
